Quick How-To Guide: Using the EHR 12-Block™

What if you could map risk in minutes — and see where your team is relying on luck instead of leadership?

That’s exactly what the EHR 12-Block™ does. It takes the Energy → Event → Exposure → Harm chain and lays it out in 12 simple boxes. Four are about Barriers — the visible protections that stop harm. Four are about Resilience — the hidden systems that keep those protections working.

This is just the starting point.
The full EHR 12-Block™ guides leaders to map, test, and strengthen their defences — before harm happens.

Step 1. Spot the Energy

Ask: What energy is present? (electrical, kinetic, chemical, human).
Energy is always the starting point. No energy → no harm.

Step 2. Trace the Chain

Follow the path:

  • What could trigger that energy?

  • Who or what could be exposed?

  • What would the harm be if it reached them?

Step 3. Map the Barriers

For each step, ask:

  • What barrier is in place to stop the energy, trigger, or exposure?

  • If contact does occur, what factors reduce its severity? (PPE, airbags, sprinklers — last resort).

Step 4. Test the Resilience

Now go deeper:

  • How do we know those barriers will work tomorrow?

  • Look for hidden and visible controls: inspections, audits, supervision, training, fit-testing, and emergency drills.
